Erdist Chavers

July 1, 1928 — May 19, 2022

Erdist Clennon Chavers - Age 93, came face to face with his Lord and Savior at 9:45 on Thursday night, May 19, 2022. It was at this time, he heard his Savior say, "'Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord". Erdist loved the Lord, his wife of 55 years, children, and grandchildren, and he was loved by them.
Mr. Chavers was born in Goodway, Alabama and was a long-time resident of Mobile, Alabama. Erdist Chavers graduated from Foley High School in 1948 where he played quarterback and right tackle. He served in the Air Force, first going through bootcamp at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX and received training at Scott Air Force Base in Bellville, IL. A life-long learner, Erdist furthered his education by studying electrical engineering at Huntingdon College and Auburn University. While serving in the Air Force, he serviced and maintained electrical operations for such aircraft as the Lockheed C-130 Hercules during the Vietnam Conflict. He continued serving his country in the Air Force Civilian Service and retired from Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS.
His love of the outdoors included fishing, hunting, gardening, and growing scuppernongs. He enjoyed watching the Alabama Crimson Tide play football surrounded by his family, educating himself on the computer, and coaching his children and grandchildren.
He attended Luke 4:18 Fellowship. Erdist often shared his testimony and his conviction that the secret to a long life is found in the Book of Psalms Chapter 1. He believed in going to church, tithing, and providing for his family. He would often say, "What is the definition of love"? He believed that the love in your heart is not put there to stay. Love is not love, until you give it away. His favorite song was, "It is Well".

He joins his mother, Lucille Broyles and brother, Leon Chavers in God's Kingdom. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley McCawley Chavers; son, Dr. Leon Scott Chavers; daughter, Sheryl (Jesse) Verdin; Aunt, Charlie Higdon; grandsons, Colby Verdin-Colorado Springs, CO; Blake Verdin-Lakewood, CO; Lance Chavers-Penn State University, College, PA; two granddaughters, Bella and Molly Chavers of Mobile. Services will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, with public visitation starting at 9:00 a.m. and funeral service beginning at 10:00 a.m. The family would like to send a special "Thank you" for the care received from his physicians, nurses, and personnel at Ascension Providence Hospital and the staff at Saads Inpatient Hospice.
To our Pa: In life you were loved dearly. We continue to love you as you have departed us. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you on the day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories. Your love and example are still our guide. Although we cannot see you, we know you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken. Nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, our chain will link again.
